SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – At 1500 pounds, the White’s Cleaners sign has withstood hurricanes, wind, snow, and everything else nature could toss at it, for over 50 years.  That came to an end yesterday when a huge gust of wind finally won the battle, courtesy of a host of rusted bolts.

This presented a huge public safety hazard, not just to the sidewalk area, but to all of Route 9 in that region, had this blown onto the roadway.  Alerted to the situation by an off-duty firefighter, the Shrewsbury Fire Department, under the team of Captain James Colonies, responded immediately to secure the area, and worked with the property owner and KayGee signs to have the sign removed within thirty minutes.

Building inspector Patty Sheehan has been working with the owners as well, and has ordered a full enginers evaluation before she will allow reinstallation of the sign under a new set of attachment mechanisms.

I know all are extremely grateful that nobody was injured, and send out kudos to all involved for a job well-done under challenging circumstances.
