SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – One of Shrewsbury’s newest community theater companies, The Regatta Players (RePlay), presents its second musical production, a hysterical musical comedy called The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

The Regatta Players, led by Shrewsbury Schools’ Director of Music, Bonnie Narcisi, and Emerson College alumni and Shrewsbury native, Kira Cowan, has been born from many years of planning, preparation and dreaming. For the second full-scale production by this fledgeling theater group, RePlay is proud to announce their upcoming production of The 25th Annual

Putnam County Spelling Bee, a rip-roaring comedy with nonstop shenanigans and true heart. Spelling Bee features an all-star cast of new and familiar faces from the Shrewsbury theater scene.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a hilarious tale of six young people (Matt Morgera, Jackie Theoharis, Carolyn McRae, Robino Africa, Gina Briguglio and Brendan Freeman) in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups (Laura Gulli, Brian Freeman and Ryan Sheehan) who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learning that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. The show’s Tony Award winning creative team has fashioned this unlikely hit musical about the most unexpected of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Co-directed by Kira Cowan and Bonnie Narcisi, the show promises to entertain and delight people of all ages and walks of life.

RePlay was conceived with the hopes of offering an outlet for creativity to those hoping to pursue theatrical endeavors after high school. By honing and displaying the talents of area graduates, RePlay aims to both provide the community with high quality theater while also encouraging the talents of emerging performers. RePlay strives to offer its performers more challenging material than was available in high school while making theater more accessible to a community that both fosters creative talent and craves first-rate entertainment. With every performance, they hope to grow and flourish while constantly stressing the importance of keeping theater alive and accessible to all.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will appear on the Southgate Theater stage at 30 Julio Drive in Shrewsbury on August 12th and 13th at 7pm and August 14th at 2pm. Tickets are $12 for seniors students and $15 for the general public. Reserve your tickets online at regattaplayers@gmail.com or purchase them at the door.
