SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – As you well know, golf season is now here and on Thursday September 22, 2011 we will be hosting the Swing for Hope Charity Golf Classic at Wachusett Country Club,  in memory of Florence Barbash and Bill Fogarty. My mother Florence and Jim Fogarty’s brother Bill each waged their own very courageous battle with cancer, the disease that eventually took their lives. Like us, I’m sure many of you here in Shrewsbury have been affected by cancer in some way. Maybe not yourself but I’m sure you have a close friend or relative whose life has been devastated by this disease. Imagine a child having to undergo those same terrifying circumstances. A child having to fight to live seems unimaginable; unfortunately it is a reality for a growing number of families. Both Florence, a career nursery school teacher and Billy, a career law enforcement officer, would be proud that we are trying to help give these kids the “hope” that they need by donating all proceeds from this event to the Why Me organization. Why Me (Worcester Help for Youth Memories Everlasting) is local non-profit organization that provides support to local families who have a child with cancer.

Since 1985 Why Me has provided vital logistical, emotional and financial support to nearly 500 children with cancer and their families. The money raised through this event will help fund so many necessary and important programs throughout the year. Some of these include retreat weekends for the bereaved family, family events like our annual Halloween and Holiday parties, direct financial assistance, emotional support and last but not least, Sherry’s House. Sherry’s House is a beautiful home that welcomes families and provides lodging while their child is receiving cancer treatments in the New England area. Everything that Why Me does for these families is cost free, including lodging at Sherry’s House. We are ever mindful however that everything we do for our families would not be possible without friends in the community like you.
