SHREWSBURY, MA – Leave it to the fantastic first graders at Beal School to come up with a wonderful way to honor the community.  Working together, they collected over SIXTY THOUSAND pennies, all of which would go towards the rebuilding project for the World War I memorial in front of Maj. Howard Beal School.  With the help of their teachers, and the great folks at Central One Federal Credit Union, they were able to take all of their pennies to the coin machine and turn it into cold, hard cash, that they presented today to Art Dobson and John Masiello, members of the memorial committee.

The ancient WWI monument in front of Beal has been falling apart for years.  Originally put in place to honor the eight Shrewsbury residents who gave their lives in the :war to end all wars,” the base of the flagpole has cracked in multiple spots, and the pole itself has been removed for safety purposes.  The plans for the new monument are very nice, and can be viewed in the lobby at town hall.

Thanks to Representative Matt Beaton for coming out to speak today, along with a representative from Congressman McGoverns office.

The project has raised about 60% of the funds needed to complete the project, and if you’d like to make a tax deductible contribution, those would be very welcome.
