That’s the mission of over 400 Shrewsbury residents who participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Shrewsbury. While the 7th annual Relay for Life event will be held this spring at Oak Middle School, participants are officially kicking off the event on March 8 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Parish.
The Kick-off event will help recap last year’s success and guide new participants through the registration process. Attendees will enjoy music, refreshments, and a chance to win exciting prizes including; Worcester Sharks tickets, a Lia Sophia gift certificate, first choice of a tent site at the Relay and a reserved parking place close to the field!
Last years Relay included over 40 teams from the community and raised over $70,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, Relay for Life planners aim to outdo last year’s numbers by reaching out to the entire community including; schools, faith based groups, civic clubs, recreational teams and more.  The Relay For Life of Shrewsbury is also looking for volunteers who are interested in helping plan this incredible event. For more information about getting involved with Relay please contact Susan Matano at the American Cancer Society at 508.270.4639.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at Oak Middle School and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are held as an overnight event, symbolizing that cancer never sleeps.
Relay began in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon in Tacoma, Washington, ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay has grown from a single man’s passion to fight cancer into the world’s largest movement to end the disease. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. Thanks to Relay participants, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives.
