SHREWSBURY, Massachusetts – It’s become an annual tradition like no other, as over 200 of the top science students from Central Massachusetts converge of WPI for the Worcester Regional Science Fair – the feeder tournament for the Massachusetts State Finals to be held at MIT in May.

Each school in the region is responsible for hand picking it’s best and brightest, and Shrewsbury was well represented by a fantastic group of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, all of the on a quest for prize money, scholarship funds, and of course the highly coveted entry to the state finals.   For several, this was a repeat appearance from last year, and they were a huge help in guiding the new students through the process.

The quality of the projects submitted this year were just fantastic, and it’s simply mind-boggling to realize that these guys are just young kids with a whole lifetime on invention and research in front of them.  Overall this was the most fiercely competitive field I’ve seen at the Worcester Fair.

First prize this year went to a student from Mass Academy who designed an iPhone App to help people protect themselves from Tornados.  It was extremely cool, and took a tremendous amount of work to put it together.

Second place went to Shrewsbury’s, Sam Levine for his sub orbital space platform, which flew 15 miles into the atmosphere as it sailed across the state conducting high altitude experiments.

Also from Shrewsbury High School, Raghav Mishra took home a second place award for his very unique fuel cell, run off of sewage waste.

Those three above will be representing Shrewsbury at the Massachusetts State Science Fair at MIT.

Bringing home additional honors for Shrewsbury was Vivian He, for her study of alcohol production from molasses, Rachel Kositksy, for her iMood phone App, and Catherine Zhang.

Congratulations to all of the fantastic competitors, not just on their incredible commitment, but also for the respectful way in which they represented Shrewsbury to the rest of the community.  To those that are advancing to the finals, best of luck in May, and let’s see you bring home the gold for Shrewsbury!!
